Champions League: MLS Update

Tuesday was a bit of a mixed bag for Major League Soccer clubs in the 2011-12 CONCACAF Champions League, as Toronto FC earned a vital 1-0 win over Tauro FC of Panama while the Seattle Sounders dropped a tight 1-0 decision to Herediano (Costa Rica). Toronto’s win vaults the Reds to second place in Group C with six points while Seattle remains atop Group D, having secured nine points in four matches.

Toronto FC 1-0 Tauro FC
Following a sustained spell of pressure, Danny Koevermans was able to put his club ahead in the 40th minute with a skilled header from three yards out. The forward leapt up towards a free ball in the box and was just able to nod it over the outstretched arms of goalkeeper Alvaro Anzola.

The Reds did a good job of bending without breaking in the second half, as the club absorbed Tauro’s pressure without conceding. When all was said and done the visitors had outshot TFC by a 10-7 mark but trailed in the most important category, goals scored.

Seattle 0-1 Herediano
After knocking on the door a number of times in the early going, Herediano broke through in the 24th minute on a gorgeous free kick by Josimar Arias. The midfielder bent a 25-yard shot perfectly over the wall and just out of Kasey Keller’s reach to put his side up 1-0.

The Sounders had a very good chance in the 82nd minute when a strong buildup led to a sharp header from Lamar Neagle. Herediano goalkeeper Daniel Cambronero was ready for the chance, however, and made a nice diving save to preserve the narrow margin.
